A piano. Violins. A carried mood. A slender guy stands in the video in black jeans, black turtleneck sweater and a little too big Stetson in a church, in which the sunlight falls dramatically through coloured glass windows …

… and Tim McGraw, that slim guy, as a dark angel. Pathetic? Applied thickly? And yes! Those who are not deterred by this scenery will be rewarded with one of the most beautiful self-discovery ballads of country music. Well, country. It’s modern country from the late 90s and therefore perhaps more rock or pop than traditional business. But let’s let drawers be drawers and just be happy about this wonderful track, which songwriter Marcus Hummon has designed in a great way. It’s about a purified hot spur. It’s about a guy who apparently caused a lot of trouble and hurt people again and again through youthful imprudence – and who now realizes that the cause lies with himself: “One of these days I’m gonna love me” is the last insightful line you can swallow. Especially since the composer has found grandiose melodies and harmonies for this character formation in three verses. Hummon also recorded this song himself on an early solo album. Only: You don’t buy the story from him, this nice, harmless guy – unlike Tim McGraw, who is said not to have been a child of sadness.
